Leaders at Good Samaritan have wanted to bring a freestanding, inpatient hospice service to the valley since the nonprofit’s inception in 1992. Now, 30 years later, the dream has become a reality.
Good Samaritan hosted an opening ceremony for the region’s first freestanding hospice care center in Roanoke on Friday, June 7.
Good Samaritan Hospice has embarked on a capital campaign for its in-patient Center for Caring – the first facility of its kind in the region.
“All you need is faith, family, and Good Samaritan Hospice to get you through anything,” begins Kim Shelor, who has woven Good Sam into the very fabric of her family. Her mother-in-law, Katherine Shelor, and both parents, Jack and Betty Dunn, were each cared for by our staff, and some became like family.
Good Samaritan, the local leader in advanced illness care, was recognized as a Hospice Honors Award Recipient at the National Hospice and Palliative Care Conference in National Harbor, Maryland in January 2022.
Ashley Leonard grew up a mile and a half away from her Meemaw, Bernice Sesler. She and her brother grew up riding bikes to her house and Meemaw cooked dinner for them every Thursday.
